Winners impress with their ‘green’ initiatives

Kyocera is delighted to announce the winners of the third annual GreenLight awards.

The awards recognise individuals and organisations that have been instrumental in identifying and meeting an environmental challenge associated with their business and/or promoting public awareness, understanding and active concern for the enhancement and protection of the environment.

The awards were presented by Tracey Rawling Church, Marketing Director at Kyocera during the Green Card conference on the 21st May.

Category Winners

Public Sector: Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust

In March 2007, the Trust launched an energy awareness campaign to educate staff, patients and visitors on their environmental impact, reduce their costs and carbon emissions by 3000 tonnes by 2010.

This was done through an impressive array of marketing materials, publicity and direct action to engage staff. The first year’s results exceeded all expectations with gas consumption down by 14.64%, equal to 2,484 tonnes of CO2 and electricity consumption down by 5.64%, equal to 1,804 tonnes of CO2. Guy’s and St Thomas have been approached by other Trusts to share information and best practice, and were the first public sector organisation to join the Green500.

Private sector – under 50 employees: VeryPC

VeryPC’s ethos is “there is more to environmentally friendly computing than reduced energy consumption”. When developing a new “green” product, VeryPC make sure they look at every aspect, from the manufacture of each component, the distribution, to the energy savings and the longevity of the finished product for the user. All products are RoHS compliant, have reduced plastics content and are fully WEEE registered

VeryPC have also instigated educational advertising campaigns to increase awareness as well as ‘practicing what they preach’ within their own company.

Private Sector – over 50 employees: Taylor Bloxham Limited

Taylor Bloxham Limited is one of the largest independent Lithographic printers in the UK. During the period 2006 to 2008, Taylor Bloxham has focused on waste minimisation, recycling and energy efficiency initiatives.

Some of their key achievements include a comprehensive recycling programme of all production and office paper, cardboard, polythene, plastic, CD’s, printer consumables, aluminium plates and drinks cans. A waste segregation system has also been set up, reducing waste disposal costs and the amount sent to landfill.

IT/Office Products sector: Commercial Group

Inspired by an audience with Al Gore, The Commercial Group's founder partner Simone Mann examined the company from top to bottom and put in a comprehensive plan to make the organisation carbon neautral and dramatically reduce the environmental impact of its operations. The company has gone beyond this, taking its message to partners and customers, and is seeing significant commercial benefits in addition to cost reductions.

Kyocera’s Communications Manager, Helen Hopper, comments: “The standard of entries to the GreenLight awards continues to rise. We were looking for projects that show innovation, creativity, and which really engage their stakeholders, and we were not disappointed. We’d like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to the winners, and our thanks to all those organisations that took the time to enter the awards.”
